Adenomatous polyps are precancerous, eventually leading to colon tumors. Prevention of their development would be an effective measure for control of some forms of colon cancer. A case-control study (ICDB/95609477) included 574 cases with polyps and 707 clinic controls who were polyp-free at colonoscopy. Community controls (n=550) were frequency matched to cases on age, sex and zip code. The results suggest that fruit rather than vegetables may be related to lower adenoma risk. Dietary intake was assessed using a modified Willett food frequency questionnaire. Age- and sex-adjusted odds ratios (OR) comparing high (mean=80.8 servings/week) vs low (mean=17.4 servings/week) quintiles for total vegetables and fruits were 0.76 (p=0.14) for clinic controls and 0.71 (p=0.08) for community controls. No relationship was found for vegetables but there was an inverse association for fruit intake with OR of 0.71 (p=0.08) for clinic controls and 0.70 (p=0.06) for community controls. Similarly, OR of 0.63 (p=0.01) and 0.71 (p=0.06) were observed for fruit juice for clinic and community controls, respectively.
