Long-Term Effects of Therapy - Cures that have been achieved in childhood cancer mean that there are now survivors who were treated many years before, presenting the opportunity to study long-term effects of treatment. One organ recently targeted for such study is the thyroid. Irradiation in particular has given very high incidences of thyroid abnormalities. In one report (ICDB/95612063), up to 57.6% had some laboratory test evidence of hypothyroidism, and 18.8% presented with clinical evidence of the disorder. Another study reported 41% incidence of abnormal thyroids on ultrasound scanning (ICDB/95612065). A third report, involving treatment of brain tumors (ICDB/95612089) concluded that cranial irradiation causes hypothalamic-pituitary hypothyroidism which is transient, while spinal treatment causes primary hypothyroidism through organ damage.
