Thick malignant melanomas (greater than or equal to 3.0 mm), in
general, have a poor prognosis and as a direct result these lesions
tend to receive less clinical and pathological interest. A follow-
up study from Aberdeen University Medical School in Scotland
(Blessing; ICDB/95612267), identified 40 (27 females and 13 males)
cases from the data base of the East of Scotland, Scottish Melanoma
Group , who have had at least a 10 year disease free survival
(range 10-14 years). This represents 17.6% of thick lesions with at
least a 10 year follow-up. These results confirm that not all
thick melanomas have a poor prognosis, and that there appears to be
a subset of these thick lesions with a lower metastatic potential.
