Tumor Markers - Biotechnology has provided clinicians with a range of specific techniques that greatly assist diagnosis, allow estimation of whether there is residual cancer after treatment and how much, and with methods for specifically tagging cancers with radioactive material for treatment. Tumor markers are major elements of this technology. They latch onto antigens on the tumors. Unfortunately, many of them are less specific than we would like, and may also target some normal tissues. One way to address this problem is to use a battery of markers, which increase both sensitivity and specificity. Two recent reports used a neural network approach with three panels of four or six individual markers to diagnose ovarian (ICDB/95614997) and bladder (ICDB/95615001) cancers. The technique was applied to combined data from Austria, Egypt and Germany, and also clearly indicated which markers were of greatest utility.
