The HER-2/neu Gene -
Excessive expression and amplification of the HER-2/neu gene have
been associated previously with poorer survival of women with
breast and ovarian cancer. Now it appears that the same holds
true for endometrial cancer, according to a study from the
University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and the M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, described in the December
1, 1995, issue of Cancer Research. Women with amplification or
overexpression of HER-2/neu had significantly poorer 8-10-year
disease-free and overall survival than those with normal levels.
Only 4 of the 34 (12%) with low expression of HER-2/neu died of
their disease, compared with 26 of 41 (63%) in the group with
high expression. Interestingly, it was found that among the
women treated with adjuvant chemotherapy, those with
overexpression of HER-2/neu did significantly better than those
with less expression, but the numbers of patients were small.
