Prognostic Value of bcl-2 -
A paper in the November, 1995 issue of the British Journal of Cancer
examined the prognostic value of the apoptosis inhibitor gene,
bcl-2, in ovarian cancer. They reported that it is strongly
expressed in normal ovaries, but that both borderline and
malignant ovarian tumors showed significantly reduced staining
compared with normal tissue. Staining was also more reduced in
those who had residual left behind after surgery. There was an
inverse relationship to expression of the p53 gene. Bcl-2 was
correlated with survival, which was significantly reduced in the
groups with weakly-stained and unstained tumors. This applied to
those with both advanced and residual tumor, and to the p53-
positive tumor groups.
