- Liver cancer risk and hepatitis C infection - A number of studies
have established that hepatitis B infections can cause liver
cancer. The situation regarding hepatitis C is less clear,
although it is generally considered that there is a connection.
A study reported this month from Kyushu University, and carried
out in a region (Fukuoko Prefecture) where the incidence of liver
cancer is among the highest in Japan, determined that 78% of the
liver cancers were attributable to hepatitis C infection,
particularly the 1b variety. (Tanaka, J National Cancer
Institute 88:742, 1996)
