Summary

Reviews and critical evaluations of the EMF research literature consider essentially similar groups of studies, but differences in emphasis have resulted in reviews that give different slants to the conclusion and interpretation of results. Given the ambiguity in epidemiologic and experimental evidence, some reviewers have emphasized a lack of convincing evidence that EMF exposure produces adverse effects, while others have emphasized the lack of certainty that it does not. This section reviews three comprehensive surveys of EMF research issues: (1) the Director's final report on the US Electric and Magnetic Fields Research and Public Information Dissemination (EMF-RAPID) Program, (2) a wide-ranging review of the EMF literature by a physicist from Trent University, Peterborough Ontario, that evaluated two major official US reports, experimental results, and sources of environmental and residential ELF EMF exposures from a Canadian perspective, and (3) a review from the UK which discussed a similar range of experimental and exposure assessment results in the context of recent statements from official agencies and professional groups about possible health hazards of ELF EMFs.
