SUMMARY OF MAJOR ONGOING EMF BIOEFFECTS RESEARCH (DRAFT)

FEBRUARY 15, 1994

This compilation of projects provides a quick overview of EMF bioeffects research underway in the United States and internationally. All major studies for the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) are included. Approximately 35 of the most significant international studies have also been included with particular emphasis on epidemiology.

The first table (Table 1) provides a FY94 snapshot view, by research category, of projects sponsored by the major funding organizations. For each research category and sponsor, the number of projects is shown followed by the funding level in parentheses.

Funding by project is not available for most international studies, but estimated total EMF expenditures by country are shown in a separate table (Table 2). It should be noted that the funding figures in the international table include spending for all EMF activities (such as engineering) and are FY93 estimates.

Brief descriptions of each of the 112 studies considered for this summary are available for viewing, and are indexed according to:

The study descriptions include title, category, brief description, sponsoring organization, principle investigator, organizational affiliation, and fiscal year '94 budget.

Overall, this document is a draft intended for planning purposes, and further refinement will be necessary as more information is gathered and evaluated.

This summary of ongoing research was prepared by Paul C. Gailey of Oak Ridge National Laboratories, and Imre Gyuk, EMF Research Program Manager, U.S. Department of Energy.
