A proportional mortality ratio study of cancer among females employed in the telephone industry was conducted. Records of a 24 state death-certificate-based surveillance system, supported by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the National Center for Health Statistics, were searched to identify all cancer deaths occurring from 1984 through 1989 among women employed in the telephone industry. The authors conclude that among younger white women employed in the telephone industry, there were significant excess risks for several cancers. Since no information on nonoccupational risk factors was available, socioeconomic status or lifestyle factors could explain these excess risks, particularly the reproductive cancers. Among women 25-49 yr old, the excess risks for these cancers are more evident, particularly for engineers, technicians, and office workers, but the reliability of job-related risk assessments were limited by small sample size.
