A Texas research group conducted a survey of potential occupational exposure to extremely low frequency and voice frequency (ELF/VF) magnetic fields in 2 health care facilities, a large multilevel research and teaching hospital, and a single story outpatient health care facility located on the upper Texas Gulf coast. ELF/VF magnetic fields were defined as fields in the 40 to 1,000-Hz range. The authors concluded that no single variable such as a personal time-weighted average magnetic field exposure or maximum flux density is sufficient to evaluate and describe hospital workers' magnetic field exposures. Although the measured exposures are low compared to existing occupational guidelines, the authors suggested that health concerns raised by occupational epidemiological studies indicate that further evaluation of the characteristics of ELF/VF magnetic field exposures is warranted. There are 18 women in the office where I work. Three of the 18 have been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer in a 10 month period. Inflammatory breast cancer is a very rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. According to the tumor registry, in this region only 0.84% of all breast cancers reported from 1973 thru 1996 were inflammatory breast cancer. The office in which I work has 16.7% in a 10 month period. We all know cancer is not contagious however we can not help but believe there is an environmental factor contributing the this unfortunate incident. My question to you is, could the MRI under our office have anything to do with this? One woman in the office next us stated she always knew when they were doing a MRI because her computer would change colors and the screen would turn sideways. Your thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
