A case-control study of breast cancer among female radiologic technologists was conducted using a population obtained from 105,000 women certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (1926-1980). The primary focus of the study was on presumed ionizing radiation exposures based on questionnaire responses regarding procedures used, protective practices, and duration of employment. Exposure to microwave/ultrasound diathermy was also briefly considered. Breast cancer was not significantly associated with any of the procedures which would result in potential ionizing or non-ionizing radiation exposure, and risk was not related to the number of years of work with any particular procedure. The highest risk was associated with fluoroscopy, a relative risk of 1.14, and it was not significantly increased. [BENER 12476]
