The authors surveyed 60-Hz occupational magnetic field exposures at 5 electric utility companies as part of a large-scale epidemiologic study. The authors concluded that the job exposure matrix used in this study has efficiently incorporated the differences in magnetic field exposure within occupational categories between companies and provides an objective, statistically-based method for estimating cumulative magnetic field exposures. However, given that average exposure levels in the highest and lowest groups differed only by a factor of 10 and that there is considerable overlap of exposures due to a large between-worker within-group variability, there is a need to design studies of sufficient statistical power to detect relationships between magnetic field exposure and cancer.
