The authors reviewed briefly beneficial and potentially harmful effects of external electrical currents and suggested a general, phenomenological model that may reconcile the opposite effects. The restoration of nerve and muscle function, enhanced bone healing, nerve regeneration, wound healing, and pain relief are examples of reported beneficial effects of applied electrical currents. The authors developed a model, based on thermodynamics, which offered no specific solutions or mechanisms but attempted to explain how electrical perturbations could be beneficial, harmful, or without any effect.
