Researchers from Massey University in New Zealand investigated the acute effects of a 50-Hz magnetic field on human task performance and cardiovascular function. One hundred and one volunteers were exposed or sham exposed to a 50-Hz, 100-uT (1-G) magnetic field for 9 min during two 30-min experimental sessions on 2 consecutive days. The subjects' task was to decide which of 2 sequentially presented light flashes was of longer duration. The reaction times and percentage of correct decisions (PCs) were recorded for each level of task difficulty. Changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, and heart rate were recorded before and after exposure. The magnetic field significantly decreased reaction times at the hardest level of task difficulty. Accuracy of the PCs were not significantly affected by magnetic field exposure, nor did magnetic field exposure significantly affect any of the cardiovascular variables. The authors concluded that extremely low-frequency magnetic fields can affect human performance. [BENER 13745]

October 21, 1999 - Richard Hello. I'm on the 2nd floor just above a couple of NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (huge magnets)) instruments. Our computer screens turn various colors during the day and usually have a smeared intensity with color change appearance. Are there any known health effects-- especially on the heart? If so, where can I go for better information. Thanks for any reply/information.

July 25, 1999 - Larry So what the heck does it all mean? should I or shouldn't I buy that house with the tower of high voltage lines approx. 1000 yards behind the house? I can't draw a conclusion; can anyone just spit it out and say it, "Those things are dangerous, get away, run away" or are we too afraid to admit it? Or are EMF's our friends, and the answer to modern travel without fossil fuels?
