The 1971-1985 rates of cancer incidence in Polish military personnel exposed occupationally to radiofrequency (RF)/microwave radiation were increased over the rates for nonexposed personnel. There was an increasing number of exposed personnel from 1980 to 1985, due to the introduction of new types of electronic equipment for use in military units. Individual exposures, however, could not be easily determined. The study demonstrated a doubled incidence in all cancers, a 3-fold increase of cancers of the alimentary tract, and a 6-fold increase of hematopoietic and lymphatic system malignancies in 20 to 59-yr old career military personnel occupationally exposed to pulse-modulated 150 to 3,500-MHz RF/microwave radiation. These findings, however, were not sufficient to establish a causal link between EMF exposure and the development of neoplastic disease, since retrospective analyses cannot provide convincing evidence for such links. Nevertheless, the high incidence of certain cancers in persons exposed to pulse-modulated RF/microwave radiation clearly demonstrates an urgent need for identifying causal factors present in the occupational environment.
