A further analysis of leukemia related to occupational exposure of electric utility workers to 60-Hz electric and magnetic fields was conducted in a nested case control study within a study base of active and retired male employees of Ontario Hydro, Ontario, Canada. This study confirms the previously reported associations between estimated exposures to magnetic fields and certain types of leukemia in the Ontario Hydro component of the Theriault et al. study, but also demonstrates significant new associations between cumulative electric field exposure and all leukemia. There are also suggestions that the risk may primarily relate to acute nonlymphoid leukemia and its component, acute myeloid leukemia. [BENER 15047]

April 28, 2003 - Mike TO Joyce and her concern about the radioactive materials in the Measurex system. The "buttons" we wear are dosimeters that collect radiation. These buttons are tested quarterly as new ones are issued. After 15 years of working on these radioactive measurement devices I have never had a radiation dose above background level. In other words, I received no more radiation than I would sitting in my livingroom reading the newpaper for 15 years. During my time in this industry I have never heard of one of my co-workers passing on because of leukemia. The danger label you wrote about served its purpose of keeping the curious from satisfaction. There are strict rules and laws for servicing radioactive devices which is why the trained Measurex service representative is there. On another note, we don't get paid enough to take risks with radioactive devices because we could lose our jobs if we violate the laws and rules.

April 24, 2003 - Peter (previous measurex engineer) Joyce unfortunately you don't have the correct info. I have worked on measurex scanners and sensors which have radioactive sources for the past 23 years. The badges are dosimeters and are NOT a warning device because they are only turned in and tested every quarter (i.e. they measure accumulated radiation exposure over the 3 month period). Even when the source is powered up and open, the radiation levels within one foot of the scanner heads is so low that it does not exceed the NRC maximum permitted dose. Hope that answers your query. If you want exact technical details please email the RSO at Honeywell. Best regards, Peter

August 21, 2002 - Joyce My husband worked in a paper mill and was a machine tender on a paper machine. There was a measurex machine that scanned the paper which I believe contained radiation material. I was told it said DANGER on it. My husband told me when repair men came to work on this measurex machine they wore some sort of buttons to warn them of if there was any radiation leaking. My husband died 16 years ago from leukemia. Could the measurex machine been responsible for him getting leukemia?
