Researchers in Rochester NY attempted to replicate the results of an earlier study that found that low-intensity magnetic fields disrupted the operant behavior of rats. Food-deprived rats were trained to press a lever to obtain food pellets. After baseline training, the rats were exposed to several combinations of DC and 60-Hz magnetic fields in a different chamber for 30 min prior to testing. The DC and 60-Hz field combinations were designed to produce cyclotron resonance conditions for calcium and lithium. These ions are thought to be important for neurological responses. The operant behavior of the rats was not altered by magnetic field exposure in any of the experiments. The authors concluded that the results of these experiments failed to confirm the earlier findings, although the combined DC and 60-Hz magnetic field conditions were similar. [BENER 15072]
