The mortality of the population in a town in the Vladimir region of Russia was studied by a retrospective cohort method, and compared to the average level in the Vladimir region as a whole. The town is situated next to a 500-kV, 50-Hz electric power transmission line; some country houses are even built under the line. The authors noted, however, that people stay at the country houses for no more than 3-4 months per year. The electric field level in all apartment buildings was below the currently effective safety limit (1 kV/m). There was a subtle and statistically insignificant increase in suicide rate (18 cases vs. 14.2 expected in males, and 3 vs. 2.4 in females), and in death from leukemia (1 case instead of 0.8 both for males and females). Because none of the increases where statistically significant, the authors concluded that there are no substantial adverse health effects from living nearby to a 500 kV electric power line.
