In a study reported in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, researchers from the University
of North Carolina and the National Center for Environmental Health analyzed data from the psychological
evaluation portion of the Vietnam Experience Study (VES) dealing with depression, and compared the risk of
diagnosed depression, depressive symptoms, and elevations in personality scales indicative of depression
among participants employed as electrical workers to those in nonelectrical occupations. The VES, which was
conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, was designed to examine possible adverse health effects
associated with serving in Vietnam among US Army veterans, approximately half of whom served in Vietnam.
The authors concluded that the results provide evidence against a widespread or sizable increase in depression
or related symptoms in electrical workers. [BENER 10019]
