Over the past decade there has been a growing interest in the potential role of male occupational exposures in
reproductive health. Writing in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, researchers from the
University of North Carolina reported the results of their review of published studies dating from 1974
through 1991 which examined possible associations between paternal occupational exposure and spontaneous
abortion. The authors concluded that the literature dealing with associations between paternal occupational
exposures and the risk of spontaneous abortion in their partners is large, but not of high quality, at least until
recently. This reflects the fact that most studies have been based on maternal or paternal reports of exposure
and pregnancy outcome. [BENER 10021]
