Summary

Results of a study by the National Toxicology Program, which looks at exposure to 60-Hz magnetic fields as a complete carcinogen, are discussed and compared to a similar long-term carcinogenicity study in Fischer rats from Canada. Criticism of these experiments is presented and a published exchange of letters between researchers is summarized and discussed. Work on a transgenic model system which examined the effects of 50-Hz magnetic fields ornithine decarboxylase activity and tumor production is summarized. An Australian study is discussed in which transgenic mice were exposed to 50-Hz fields and examined for lymphoma incidence. A German study is discussed which looked at EMF effects on mammary tumor induction. An Italian study used Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to 50-Hz EMF and looked at alterations in serum chemistry, alterations in the central nervous system (including dopamine, catecholamine, and mu-opioid receptors in various brain regions), and gross histopathological changes in major organs. Another study of Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to 50-Hz EMF looked at immunological effects. [three pages, 11 references].
