Summary

A Yugoslav research team reviewed studies on the effects of a broad range of natural and man-made magnetic fields (MFs) of various frequencies and waveform characteristics on living organisms. One study examined the promoting potential of extremely low frequency (ELF) MFs on skin tumor formation in mice, while another examined the effects of ELF MFs on the development of hematological malignancies in mice genetically predisposed to develop lymphomas. We summarize a review that covers recent reports on the biological effects of radiofrequency (RF) fields of the type used in cellular phones and epidemiological studies of people living near radar stations. A Russian report of behavioral effects on cats of modulated 980 MHz microwaves is discussed. Researchers attempted to confirm a reported decrease in brain cholinergic activity in rats exposed to ELF as well as RF EMF. Another group examined the effects of ELF MFs over a range of intensities on the performance of a spatial learning task in mice. There is a discussion of the biochemical basis for an ELF MF effect on pain perception in invertebrates. [three pages, 9 references].
