Summary

A study was reported in which an investigator injected tumor cells into a compatible rat strain and exposed the rats to a 10-G linearly polarized 60-Hz magnetic field, 20 hours/day 7 days/week for up to 11 weeks. The study looked to see whether there was an enhancement or retardation of normal tumor progression while exposed to the EMF. A review was done of several large scale studies examining ELF EMFs as a complete carcinogen or in initiation-promotion studies. A second review was discussed of studies looking for enhancement of carcinogenesis or of promotion of carcinogenesis by power frequency EMFs. A third review focused on useful model systems with potential for revealing what mechanism underlies the effect, if any, that EMF has on the promotion process. All three reviews were compared and discussed. Finally a detailed description of a large research exposure facility is used as an example to discuss the necessary design of a facility to be used in EMF exposure research.
