Summary

A very appealing theory for the cancer-promoting effect of EMF has been via altered circadian rhythms of pineal activity and melatonin release. A study is presented which assessed melatonin levels in a group of 12 male patients undergoing medical treatment with pulsed magnetic fields for lower back pain. A review is discussed of research on effects of environmental strength ELF EMFs, electric fields, static magnetic fields, and sinusoidal magnetic fields, on the production of pineal melatonin in mammals and humans. While the melatonin hypothesis is an appealing theory, results so far are inconclusive. This article concludes with a discussion of the hypothesis. [one page, 2 references].
