Summary

A very appealing theory for the cancer-promoting effect of EMF has been via altered circadian rhythms of pineal activity and melatonin release. However, recent studies have not been very supportive of this mechanism. Two interrelated reports relevant to the melatonin question are reviewed in this issue of Electromagnetic Field Toxicology Reporter. In the first report a group of Canadan researchers studied the effects of a 60-Hz EMF field (30 µT, 10 kV/m) on photophasic blood melatonin levels in American kestrels. In a second report researchers examined long term growth and body mass of American kestrels exposed to EMFs. [two pages, 2 references].
