Summary

A number of epidemiological studies reviewed in this article focussed on general health and cancer risks among electric utility workers. They included: mortality and absenteeism among French workers; mortality from cardiovascular disease as related to magnetic field exposure; a review of the exposure categories proposed by Kromhout et al.; and a comparison of spot measurements and job titles as the basis for estimating worker exposures in the Netherlands and Sweden. The relationship between job titles and exposure was also emphasized in a study of uranium enrichment workers in Portsmouth, Ohio. A study of cancer risk among over 5,000 male workers at two Norwegian aluminum reduction plants is summarized. Exposure to EMFs was among the 11 occupational exposures studied by an Italian group as risk factors for developing central nervous system tumors in women, and among 41 physical and 31 chemical exposures examined in a study of breast cancer by investigators from Finland and Sweden. Another Scandinavian study examined possible associations between parental occupational magnetic field exposures and childhood central nervous system tumors and neuroblastomas in their children. Their results are discussed and compared to a study from the Russian Cancer Research Center in Moscow. Other studies discussed include the potential reproductive toxicity of occupational EMFs and the issue of sensitivity to video display terminals, presenting results of a follow-up study conducted at a Swedish high technology telecommunications corporation.
