Summary

A number of meta-analyses and reevaluations of prior studies were reviewed. They were done as part of a renewed emphasis on determining the most appropriate metrics to describe exposure. A meta-analysis of studies of the possible association between childhood leukemia and exposure to power frequency magnetic fields was intended to determine how adding results of studies published in 1996 and 1997 might alter the conclusions of the US National Research Council. These had been based on 11 studies published between 1979 and 1993. A review article discussed the National Cancer Institute/Children's Cancer Group (NCI/CCG) nationwide case-control study of children under age 15 years residing in 9 mid-Western and mid-Atlantic states to assess possible associations between incidence of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and various risk factors, including exposure to power-frequency EMF. Another significant publication in the area of domestic exposure was an evaluation of a study of residential magnetic fields and cancer in Swedish children living near high-voltage power lines that was originally conducted in 1993. In a subsequent exchange, the original authors disputed the conclusions of the re-evaluation. [six pages, 8 references].
