Two Fall Conferences Address Preliminary Genetic Damage Results from Cell Phone Research, by Kenneth R. Foster, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Bioengineering, University of Pennsylvania

The ongoing scientific debate concerning the possibility of subtle genetic damage to cells from exposure to cell phone emissions creates dramatic news stories as reported effects are either confirmed or dismissed. Dr. Kenneth R. Foster provides us with an insiders view of the debate from two small meetings in the US and Germany this past fall.

Swedish Cellular and Cordless Phone Study Suggests Brain Tumor Link, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., Editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Since the circulation of a brief meeting abstract in June 2001, those concerned about possible health effects of cell phone use have speculated about a new study from Sweden alleging statistically significant brain tumor risk increases associated with the use of cellular and cordless phones. In August 2002, a peer-reviewed paper discussing this important study was finally published. We take a careful look at the strengths and weaknesses of the study here, as well as its implications for the future of cell phone epidemiology.

A New Way of Thinking About Biological Responses: Stochasticity and EMF Biology, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., Editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

A new bacterial-genetics study featured in a recent issue of the journal Science provides new insight into the role of stochasticity (or randomness) in control of gene expression. At the same time, this study from outside the world of EMF research provides support for some of the suggestions that have been made to explain how weak EMFs may produce substantial bioeffects characterized by unusual dose-response patterns.

Special Report on Powerline Health-Effects Research: Creative Research Continues, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., Editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

A few investigators around the world continue to perform interesting powerline health studies in spite of drastically limited funding. Dr. Goldberg reports on recent studies with provocative results that may illuminate interactions between powerline EMF exposures and disease mechanisms. Ongoing research is identifying alternative measures of EMF exposure that link more closely to human disease than average magnetic field levels. Studies to determine if EMF exposure disrupts production of the pineal hormone melatonin show some links between low-level exposure and significant melatonin decreases. An occupational study shows a possible link between parental EMF exposure and birth defects. Consistent research results show that EMF exposure stimulates a natural mechanism for protecting cells against damage from heat and toxic chemicals. Based on such studies, powerline EMF retains its status as a potential health risk worthy of scientific investigation.

New Miscarriage Studies from California Suggest EMF Pregnancy Risk, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., Editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Over the past 20 years, at least 30 studies have investigated risks from EMF exposure for pregnant women, both at work and at home, with no conclusive risk identified. Now, two new studies, sponsored by the California Department of Health Services, point to the possibility of an increased miscarriage risk for women exposed to higher than normal peak EMF levels in their everyday environment. These studies could lead to further research to investigate whether the association seen with increased incidence of pregnancy loss in women exposed to high-peak EMFs is coincidental with some other lifestyle factor, or indicates a new paradigm for detecting an interaction between EMFs and pregnancy.
