INTERPHONE Study Update - Progress in International Cell-Phone Research, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Pooled results from the 13-country INTERPHONE Study, a case-control study of cell (mobile) phone use and risk of head and neck cancers, have yet to be released in print, as individual contributors to the study debate how to best report and interpret their collective results. In the absence of a published summary report, the group that coordinated the study, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has issued a brief update on results of individual national studies that have accumulated to date. In this article, Dr. Robert Goldberg reviews the IARC statement and another evaluation from Michael Kundi of the cumulative cell phone epidemiology results.

Magnetic Fields for Pain Relief, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

The use of magnets and magnetic fields of various types for relief of pain is a difficult and controversial area of research. Sales of magnetic devices for treating pain are strong and there is concern and even resentment on the part of orthodox medical practitioners and scientists who feel that the public has adopted this alternative treatment with little scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. In this article, Dr. Robert Goldberg reviews a recent clinical trial from Canada and an animal study from Hungary that attempt to resolve the value and mechanism of magnetic therapy.

New Results Using EMF to Promote Bone Growth and Healing, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Pulsed electromagnetic fields have been used clinically for more than three decades to promote bone growth in breaks that fail to heal with conventional treatment. Although there is a body of solid research showing significant clinical effectiveness, there are still fundamental unanswered questions about how the treatment works at the cellular level. It is important to know more about the process since many treatment parameters (frequency, waveform, and timing of EMF application) were worked out by trial and error or have been based on theory, and may not be producing the optimum possible effect. New techniques for assessing gene expression have opened additional avenues of investigation. Some recent studies suggest that EMF exposure may tap into natural signaling pathways that control bone cell differentiation and trigger specific gene expression for production of matrix elements and mineralization of bone.

INTERPHONE Study Results from Israel Suggest Increased Risk of Salivary Gland Tumors, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Many of the individual national studies contributing to the international INTERPHONE Study have now been published. The INTERPHONE Study assesses the risk of head and neck cancer in a large number of cell phone users by pooling results of parallel studies conducted in 13 countries. Studies published to date provide results for individual countries or groups of countries about risks of different specific kinds of tumors. In this article Dr. Robert Goldberg examines one recently published individual study from a research group in Israel that has suggested that heavy phone use in their country allows them to see a cancer risk not yet evident elsewhere.

Science Update: Ongoing EMF Research, by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., editor, Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Many issues in EMF research remain unresolved for extended periods of time. Partly a reflection of the limited funding available for this type of research, many investigators follow lines of research that span decades of activity. They gradually uncover additional details that may resolve outstanding issues, but often just provide an additional layer of puzzling results. In this special issue of EMFHR, Dr. Robert Goldberg updates areas of research featured in previous issues. The recent studies concern electrosensitivity from base stations, Alzheimer’s disease, gene expression, mutagenicity, and tumor promotion.

  • Sensitivity to Radiation from Cell Phone Base Stations
  • Occupational Magnetic Field Exposure and Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Heat Shock Gene Expression in Nematodes
  • EMF and Mutagenicity
  • EMF Enhancement of Chemically Induced Mammary Tumors
