EMF HEALTH REPORT, Vol. 4, No. 6, November/December 1996

EMF Research Advances Reported in San Antonio by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D.
The subdued tone of the November 1996 EMF meeting in San Antonio, Texas, was due to reduced funding for the meeting's sponsoring agencies and the recently released National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report. The possible negative impact of the NAS report on future power-frequency EMF research funding was on everyone's mind. However, meeting participants presented many noteworthy research results.

Hand-Held Wireless Phones and Cardiac Pacemakers
"Hand-held cellular telephones disrupt implanted pacemakers," researchers announced in 1994. With one million cardiac pacemakers implanted in Americans alone and the daily proliferation of cellular phones, a new public health issue was in the making for the telecommunications industry.

THREE COMMON QUESTIONS FROM THE REAL WORLD: ONE SCIENTIST'S ANSWERS
Most concerns about EMF are basic and pragmatic: people worry about the purchase of a house near a power transmission line, a cellular phone tower proposed for their child's elementary school, their computer monitor, or industrial EMF sources. This article describes how one scientist responds to practical questions about the safety of EMFs based on ambiguous scientific data.
    • Introduction
    • I am considering buying a new house but noticed a 138 kV power line about 100 feet from the back yard. Is this a problem and should I avoid buying the house?
    • There is a cellular phone tower proposed for the roof of my child’s elementary school. Why should I believe the industry engineers who are telling our school board it is perfectly safe?
    • Why is the Risk Indicated by EMF Research so Uncertain?
    • Conclusion: Uncovering Misconceptions and Individual Risk Decisions

Biological Effects of Power-Line Magnetic Fields Replicated.
Report from the 1996 Bioelectromagnetics Society Meeting
    by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D.

Hidden among the presentations at this year’s Bioelectromagnetics Society (BEMS) meeting was a cluster of reports that replicate and confirm earlier experiments. Rather than headline-grabbing reports of new disease associations, these results provide independent verification of important biological effects of power-line-frequency magnetic fields.

    CELLULAR PHONE RESEARCH UNDERWAY
The ubiquitous cellular mobile telephone is literally a life-saver for many callers, but do the microwaves by which these radio-phones communicate pose a long-term health risk? Past studies of similar low-level microwave exposures have raised sufficient questions to warrant an industry-wide research program now in progress. Here, we discuss current cell phone research, basic cytogenetic, toxicologic, and epidemiologic studies, and studies on cardiac pacemaker interference in easy to understand language.

Bits and Pieces: Small Steps Advance EMF Research by Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D.
While large-scale epidemiology and animal toxicology studies receive more press coverage, it is often the small-budget research studies that present the most interesting glimpses into the underlying nature of EMF bioeffects. So many different biological systems and potential EMF effects are under investigation that progress is frequently slow and sporadic, with the results of later studies sometimes raising doubts about earlier reports.

    RECENT RESEARCH

Whether the EMF scientist studies cancer rates or reproductive health in humans and laboratory animals or probes the effect of EMFs on cells grown in culture dishes, common themes of conflicting results and uncertain mechanisms tie together the diverse areas of research we call EMF bioeffects. In this issue our Recent Research section expands to update major EMF research topics and to highlight some of the smaller experiments. The reports are organized with three human studies first, then four laboratory animal studies and three cell culture studies.
