DNA DAMAGE IN EMF-EXPOSED RAT BRAIN CELLS Henry Lai, Ph.D., (University of Washington, Seattle)

Recent research in Dr. Lai’s laboratory shows that acute exposure to radiofrequency and extremely low frequency EMFs causes breaks in brain-cell DNA of animals. This new evidence contrasts with previous reports of no genotoxic damage from EMFs. Consequently, it has attracted a great deal of attention, particularly from the cellular phone industry. In this feature article, Dr. Lai describes his findings and their possible implications to human health.

CELL SITE FEVER IN NEW ZEALAND: A CASE STUDY IN ACCEPTABLE RISK. Ivan L. Beale, Ph.D. (University of Auckland, New Zealand).

Siting of cellular antennas has become a hotly debated issue in New Zealand. Wireless technology is especially important there, since it avoids the cost of stringing telephone lines through sparsely populated areas. Dr. Beale reminds us that this is a country that still rejects docking of nuclear-powered vessels in their ports based on residents’ emotional response to a seemingly negligible radiation-exposure risk. In this context, he discusses the issues of antenna siting and societal risk acceptance in New Zealand.

THERAPY WITH MILLIMETER RADIATION IN EASTERN EUROPE: TREATMENTS UNKNOWN TO WESTERN DOCTORS. Mikhail A. Rojavin, Ph.D. and Marvin C. Ziskin, M.D. (Richard J. Fox Center for Biomedical Physics, Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA).

The medical application of millimeter waves began in the former Soviet Union in the 1970s. Since the mid-1980s it has developed into an area of medical practice on a broad-scale basis in Eastern Europe but is not known in the West. Drs. Rojavin and Ziskin objectively review for us the surprising results reported from clinics in Russia and surrounding countries. They describe the possible analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and immune-stimulating uses of this noninvasive therapy.

THE CALIFORNIA ELECTRIC & MAGNETIC FIELDS PROGRAM: SCHOOL BUILDING EMF EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT. Mitchell Collier, EMF Health Report Staff Writer (Information Ventures, Inc., Philadelphia, PA).

The State of California has been at the forefront of addressing concerns over possible health and property value effects of electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) from power transmission and distribution lines. In March 1994, the California Department of Health Services (DHS) initiated its seven million dollar research and education program on the possible health effects of power line EMFs.

School Measurement Study Shows Internal Net Currents Create High Magnetic Fields. (By Karl Riley, ELF Magnetic Surveys)
Karl Riley accounts his experience with a pilot study for the California EMF Program school measurement project. The study revealed the important role of internal wiring error as a source of elevated magnetic fields in schools and other buildings.

GETTING THE MESSAGE ACROSS: HOW WEAK EMFS CAN ACT AS BIOLOGICAL SIGNALS. Richard A. Luben, Ph.D. (University of California, Riverdale).

The membranes that enclose every cell in our bodies insulate the cell's interior from external electric fields. How then can weak environmental EMFs produce a biological or health effect? Cells normally communicate with each other by chemical messengers that trigger changes at the cell membrane surface and initiate vital cell functions. Dr. Richard A. Luben studies cell communications and feels these messaging systems may provide an intriguing answer to how EMFs alter cell functions.
