EMF HEALTH REPORT, Vol. 7, No. 6, November/December 1999

Divergent Powerline Studies from the UK Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., Information Ventures, Inc.

New results from a physics research group at the University of Bristol and the UK Childhood Cancer Study were treated as conflicting results by the press, but in reality they add only small pieces of evidence to a fairly consistent if complex body of research suggesting that average magnetic field levels may not capture whatever risk exists from exposure to power frequency electromagnetic fields. In this issue of the EMF Health Report, Dr. Robert Goldberg looks at what these studies did and did not show, and how their significance has been distorted by their treatment in the Press.

Electromagnetic Fields in the Multimodal Treatment of Cancer Joseph R. Salvatore, M.D., Hematology and Oncology Departments, VA Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona

To the general public, the "health effects" of nonionizing electromagnetic radiation (from power-frequency fields to microwaves) usually means EMF exposure as a potential health hazard. To the medical community however, the possibility that EMF can harm humans and other living things also means it has a biological activity that might be exploited to produce beneficial results. In this issue of EMF Health Report, Dr. Joseph Salvatore provides an overview of some promising new applications of EMF in improving treatments for cancer.

The California "Power Grid and Land Use Policy Analysis Project" - Decision Making in the Face of Uncertainty John G. Adams, Ph.D., Merrimack College, North Andover, Massachusetts

How can electric utilities and government regulators make sound decisions to deal with potential health risks associated with EMF exposure from the power distribution infrastructure when we do not know what these risks are? One major policy research effort to develop more rational ways to make such decisions is the "Power Grid and Land Use Policy Analysis Project," funded under the California Electric & Magnetic Fields Program of the California Department of Health Services. The goal of this project is to provide California decision makers with quantitative policy analysis tools for addressing potential health effects due to exposure to EMFs from the existing and planned power grid. Dr. John G. Adams describes the considerations that went into design of the computer-based system he developed as his part of this project.

US EMF Meeting Highlights New Directions: A Map of Research Trends Robert B. Goldberg, Ph.D., Information Ventures, Inc.

Each year the Bioelectromagnetics Society Meeting provides a snapshot of EMF research. This year's meeting included results from childhood and occupational EMF exposure studies, discussions of the future of EMF research, and conclusions from two major US research initiatives. At the same time, a new cross-section of researchers was represented at the meeting. Medical applications of EMF, such as MRI and healing techniques, took their place alongside traditional epidemiologic and toxicologic studies. The program also highlighted some of the new directions in which EMF scientists must move in order to survive both the precipitous decline in US funding of EMF risk research and the shift toward European and Australasian research.

Digital Television Antennas: Flash Points for Citizen Activism Mitchell N. Collier, Information Ventures, Inc.

Inevitable development of digital broadcast of television signals brings another type of EMF exposure to the public from new antennas, as well as a focus for citizens concerned about the potential for adverse health impacts. Since digital and the current analog signals must be broadcast in tandem for at least the next seven years until the technology is fully adopted, as many as four or five hundred new tall antenna towers will be constructed in the US to serve the digital medium. These tall towers will inevitably attract community opposition for aesthetic, environmental, and health reasons.
