Biological Effects of Nonionizing Electromagnetic
Radiation [BENER] Digest Update, Volume 4, Number 2, 1994
Ever since a Florida man, speaking on the Larry King Live cable television talk show in January 1993,
blamed his wife's fatal brain tumor on exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from her cellular phone,
public opposition to cellular telephone towers has intensified. Recently, after Bell Atlantic built a cellular
phone tower in Clifton Heights, PA, local area residents were so outraged that the Borough Council revoked
Bell Atlantic's permit. The case is now in court, where more and more applications to build cellular phone
towers are being decided. Communities are fighting the proliferation of transmission towers across the
country, fearing that the EMFs from cellular antennas are a health risk. The cellular communications industry
argues that the towers operate well within the FCC's safety standards and that research has found no cause for
concern about cellular transmissions.
