FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH WORK-RELATED ACCIDENTS AND SICKNESS AMONG MAQUILADORA WORKERS: THE CASE OF NOGALES, SONORA, MEXICO

This research focused on the health problems of 497 maquiladora workers, specifically those who were associated with adverse working conditions in the maquiladora industry. Workers who had been in this type of employment for at least 6 months were studied. In this sample, 12.6% (61) reported having an accident in the last 6 months while working in the maquila, and 18.3% (89) reported an episode of sickness/disease related to the work. The body parts most affected in the accidents were the fingers and hands. Over 50% of the workers noted that there were health risks present in this work citing damage produced by machines and instruments, and damage produced by toxic substances. Among the significant predictors of work related accidents and sickness or disease were the presence of a doctor or nurse in the facility, a perception of risk associated with working conditions, and the facility offering information concerning work related risks.
