OCCUPATIONAL ASTHMA IN ALUMINUM POTROOM WORKERS RELATED TO PRE-EMPLOYMENT EOSINOPHIL COUNT

A retrospective nested case/control study was conducted to evaluate prescreening criteria indicative of risk of occupational asthma in aluminum potroom workers. Data were obtained for aluminum potroom workers from two facilities in The Netherlands. The study group included 49 cases of potroom asthma at one facility, and 133 at the other; controls were selected for each case. Preemployment medical examination records were examined. The mean preemployment total eosinophil counts of the cases of occupational asthma were significantly higher than those without asthma, although the mean number of eosinophils was within the normal range. In addition, significantly more asthma cases had respiratory problems in childhood.
