ASBESTOS BODIES IN LUNG TISSUE FOLLOWING EXPOSURE TO CROCIDOLITE

A study was conducted on the use of light microscopic asbestos body counts in lung tissue in determinations of degree of asbestos exposure. Total asbestos body counts were performed on autopsy samples of lung tissue obtained from 32 former crocidolite asbestos industry workers from Wittenoom, Australia, 78 subjects for whom there was some suspicion of asbestos involvement in their deaths, and 79 subjects with neither exposure to asbestos nor asbestos related disease. The highest asbestos body counts were found in the exposed worker group and those with asbestosis. The number of asbestos bodies in the lungs of unexposed subjects was found to be dependent only upon age. The authors conclude that light microscopic counting of asbestos bodies provides an accurate indication of the level of past occupational asbestos exposure.
