Workers in certain occupations in Finland who were at risk for developing asbestos (1332214) induced disease were identified and examined in order to diagnose existing asbestos related occupational diseases and organize followup programs. Active and retired workers under 70 years of age in construction, shipyard work, and asbestos product industries were targeted in the screening; examination included a chest X-ray and a personal interview on work history and asbestos exposure. Of 54,409 workers who were sent a preliminary questionnaire, 18,943 participated in the screening examination. The mean age of the workers was 53 years. Construction workers comprised 95% of the population; shipyard workers, 2%; and asbestos industry workers, 3%. Criteria for a positive screening result included radiographic findings indicating lung fibrosis, presence of unilateral or bilateral pleural plaques, and/or marked abnormalities of the visceral pleura. A total of 4,133 positive cases were identified and referred for further medical examination. Participating workers were also advised on asbestos related health hazards, hazards of smoking, and preventive measures. The authors conclude that this screening should prompt further national follow up of asbestos induced diseases among workers who have been exposed to asbestos.
