BACK PAIN IN THE WORKING POPULATION: PREVALENCE RATES IN DUTCH TRADES AND PROFESSIONS

The prevalence of back pain was investigated in Dutch trades and professions using data from three annual health surveys. Back pain prevalence increased with age. Workers in the construction and road transportation industries, the building materials industry, and the wholesale industry reported the highest prevalence rates of back pain. The banking, public administration, and commercial industries reported the lowest rates. Sedentary professionals, such as scientists, secretaries, chemists, administrators, and bookkeepers had relatively low prevalence rates of back pain. Women reported more symptoms than men. The authors recommend that back pain prevention measures be directed toward those groups most at risk.
