DETERMINATION OF LOW LEVEL EXPOSURE TO VOLATILE AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS AND GENOTOXIC EFFECTS IN WORKERS AT A STYRENE PLANT

The genotoxic effects of low levels of occupational exposure to volatile aromatic hydrocarbons were studied in workers at a styrene plant. Exposure determinations showed maximum concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbons in the pump house area of the facility. Workers in production areas of the facility were exposed to markedly higher levels of compounds such as styrene, ethylbenzene, and benzene than workers in control areas of the facility without hydrocarbon exposure. Significant differences between the exposed and nonexposed groups were not seen for alterations indicative of genotoxicity. The authors conclude that occupational exposure to low levels of styrene, benzene, and ethylbenzene does not appear to induce meaningful genotoxic effects.
