NEUROPSYCHIATRIC SEQUELAE FOLLOWING CHEMICAL EXPOSURE

A male chemical industry worker, age 42 years, was given a neurobehavioral evaluation following a diagnosis of hepatic injury with decreased cognitive function and psychiatric symptomatology including auditory and visual hallucinations. He worked in the wet chemical laboratory of a large product development facility. He was exposed to more than 100 chemicals, many in the developmental phase. He was frequently exposed to toluene, allyl-chloride, methyl-chloride, acrylonitrile, and carbon-tetrachloride. The authors conclude that structured psychiatric and personality interviews would appear warranted in cases of suspected chemical injury to document the extent of past and current psychiatric disturbance and to determine the proper treatment intervention.
