A study of occupational dimethylacetamide (DMAC) exposures in 127 acrylic fiber workers was conducted. Full shift (12 hour) personal air exposures were monitored monthly for 1 year. Urine samples were collected from 60 subjects before and after a shift and analyzed for DMAC, and its metabolites N-methylacetamide (NMAC), and acetamide. Post shift urine NMAC concentrations were significantly correlated with the air DMAC concentrations. An air DMAC concentration of 6.7 parts per million corresponded to a urine NMAC concentration of 62 milligrams/gram (mg/g) creatinine. The authors conclude that urinary NMAC excretion appears to be an appropriate parameter for biological monitoring of DMAC exposure. A concentration of 35mg/g NMAC in a postshift urine sample appears to be suitable for indicating overexposure to DMAC.
