A study of worker perceptions of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and possible correlations with personal and workplace characteristics was conducted. Questionnaires were completed by over 20,000 employees at 114 worksites. Over 52% of the subjects reported being bothered by ETS. Of these, 35% reported being bothered by ETS on a regular basis, which made their working conditions uncomfortable and which they felt exposed them to an unsafe working environment. Strictness of worksite policies was significantly, inversely related to perceived smokiness of the work environment. Age, smoking habits, and living with a smoker were also significantly associated with perceived workplace smokiness.
