CANCER INCIDENCE AMONG FEMALE MANUAL WORKERS

A study was conducted on incidence of cancer in a cohort consisting of 16,175 female manual workers in Iceland. Increases in the standardized rate ratios (SRRs) with increasing length of time before followup were observed. An excess of cervical cancer and deficit of breast cancer were identified, as previously reported. An overall decline in the incidence of stomach cancer was recognized; however, excesses were still noted in those with 15 years of work experience prior to followup. Increased SRRs were seen for all cancers and stomach, lung, cervical, and bladder cancer in those with more than 15 years before beginning followup. No association was seen between incidence of cancer and length of employment.
