HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES IN CONSTRUCTION WORK

Hazardous materials and potentially hazardous ingredients of chemicals used in the German construction industry were discussed. Transdermal and sensitizing materials; established, probable and suspected human carcinogens; embryotoxic chemicals; mutagenic materials; and neurotoxic substances were considered. Solvents are the main hazardous ingredient in primers and adhesives and improper ventilation often causes exposure exceeding recommended levels. Wood dust, plastic woods and sealing agents combine particulate and solvent hazards. Other hazards discussed include wood protection salts, oily wood protectants, man-made fiber insulation, bitumen products in insulation, separating agents, and cement and products containing cement. The exposure risks of working in contaminated areas, concrete renovation, flooring work, tiling, removal of old coatings, painting, and varnishing were discussed.
