MERCURY EXPOSURE OF A FEMALE DENTIST BEFORE PREGNANCY

A 30 year old dentist with previous occupational mercury (7439976) exposure and continued elevated urinary mercury levels became pregnant. She had been exposed to mercury vapor from a malfunctioning amalgamator for approximately 1 year. At the time the mercury leak was noticed her urinary mercury level was elevated, and remained elevated in samples taken over the next 18 months. The dentist became pregnant approximately 8 months after the removal of the amalgamator. No evidence of any abnormality was noted after delivery. A mercury level of 3 micrograms/liter was detected in breast milk 1 week after delivery and the urinary mercury level of the baby remained normal even after the mother returned to work. At 2 years of age the child has remained clinically healthy.
