HEPATIC ULTRASONIC CHANGES IN WORKERS EXPOSED TO PERCHLOROETHYLENE

A study of subclinical hepatotoxicity, as indicated by ultrasonography, in 29 dry cleaning workers exposed to perchloroethylene (PCE) was conducted to determine if subclinical liver toxicity was linked with PCE exposures commonly experienced in the workplace. The comparisons were 29 resident laundry workers who were unexposed to PCE. The authors found hepatic parenchymal changes more frequently in PCE-exposed workers compared to the nonsolvent exposed workers and concluded that these effects are underestimated by assays of serum enzyme activity.
