Work related respiratory problems were assessed among industrial arts (IA) teachers and referents in the Stockholm, Sweden public school system. Subjects were queried on previous and present symptoms or diseases of the skin, mucous membranes, and upper and lower airways. Compared to the referents, IA teachers reported more symptoms for nasal irritation, nasal obstruction, nasal dryness, and for a lump in the throat sensation, all of which improved away from work. Smoking IA teachers were more likely to report impaired smell and chronic bronchitis. Significant correlations were seen between symptoms, working conditions and smoking. Installation of process ventilation was reported to have lessened symptoms in about one third of IA teachers with airway complaints.
