OCCURRENCE AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THERMOPHILIC ACTINOMYCETES IN CANE-SUGAR MILLS

The employees of two sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, India participated in a study of the clinical significance of thermophilic actinomycetes. They worked in the mill from 2 to 40 years, with 36 working in the boilers section, 35 in the balking section, 29 in engineering, 14 in the cane section, 13 in the crusher section, 10 in the office, and 16 in miscellaneous activities. Symptoms included cough with scanty to moderate sputum, weakness, dyspnea, low grade fever, and dull pain over the chest. Thermoactinomyces sacchari was the preponderant species at both mills, accounting for 55.1% and 50.3%, respectively, of the total population of thermophilic actinomycetes. The overall prevalence of precipitating antibodies against thermophilic actinomycetes was 22.2% in the workers.
