MANUAL HANDLING ACTIVITIES AND RISK OF LOW BACK PAIN IN NURSES

The risk of back symptoms in nurses was examined in relation to a range of lifting tasks. The study cohort included 2,405 hospital based nurses employed by Southampton University Hospitals Trust, United Kingdom. Risk increased with the frequency of manually moving patients around on the bed, and was significantly raised in nurses who manually transferred patients between bed and chair and who had sometimes to lift patients up from the floor. No association was noted with lifting or transferring patients with a hoist or with canvas and poles.
